Realignment of the Shack

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted anything – part of that is that is because I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weekends and in my free time getting our basement cleaned up; the end goal is that I’m trying to make it a usable space as a home gym, as well as setting up a more permanent space for brewing and random food fermentation projects that work better in that type of environment.

While I was organizing, I decided that I wanted to do some shifting in the radio room as well. I went through some of the assorted crates and bins tucked away and have a few items that were gathering dust, excess to my usage, and a few others that have really just been in my way that I’m going to sell – the Kenwood TS-830s I’d previously written about – while I like this radio, it’s really just proven to take up space since picking up my FT-710. I actually sold this within a few hours of posting it online. The heavy sucker was a little more pricey to ship than I’d estimated, but it’s going to someone who really likes that model of radio and will get a lot more usage out of it than I did. An excess Alinco DR-150 2m Mobile; potentially my Yaesu FT-818 – with having the IC-705 now, and with the FTX-1F on order whenever it’s released, it’s excess to my needs at this point and can go towards an upgrade. Additionally, I came across a few redundant PCs that aren’t good for much aside from maybe an iGate that I was looking to give away, but since nobody’s taking them, they’re hitting eWaste the next time I’m by a Staples.

For space realignment, I currently have a workbench that’s about twice the size of my desk and uses up a lot more of the floor space than I’d like. This was a project I did just before COVID, and it really was useful when I was trying to get some projects done during, and for some extra desk space when I was working at home 3 days a week – and while I still find myself using it all the time, when I was trying to setup a shotshell reloader as part of it, I realized that it could use a little shortening as it’s making a chunk of the room unusable. It’s currently about 3’x6’ and is adjoined to a 2’x4’ desk. To try and make this space a little more user friendly, I found a nicer L-Shaped desk with some storage, risers, lighting, and power distribution that I’m going to put in. I’ll remove the workbench that’s there now, install the desk, and then this time measure out the remaining usable space and build an additional bench that’s fitted to the space and won’t leave odd, unusable gaps of space in the room. The beauty of this is that I can probably repurpose the wood from the current workbench to make this as the height will just be the same, so I just need to shorten the dimensions.

It’s funny, we’ve lived in this house now for a little over 6 years, and I only now am trying to optimize the space that I have… this sounds like it would’ve been a good COVID project…
