First Half this Weekend!

Sunday is the first Half Marathon for the year – in fact at the moment, it’s the ONLY Half Marathon I’m signed up for this year. I decided that I wanted to do fewer events this year, while they’re a lot of fun, they do add up in expense very quickly, and given that I’ve gotten back into shooting a few other things, I figured it was a better idea to do a few good ones than a whole lot of mediocre ones. Currently I’m signed up for this (Flower City Challenge), the Full Buffalo Marathon at the End of May, and a local 5k in July. I’m looking for a Fall Ultra, but haven’t found one I want to do yet – if anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears!

I have a target of 1:45, which is a little lofty, but I feel in range – I’ve been stuck at 1:52 since this run two years ago actually, however that was a PR at the time, and while I’ve run a couple of other halves since, the weather has been less than cooperative, meaning worse course conditions than you’d like for faster attempts (i.e. the blizzard two days before the Syracuse Half last year). Garmin has me predicted at 1:42, and usually I’ll fall a couple of minutes within that predicted time, so I have my fingers crossed I’ll make it! Strava is vindictive and has me at 1:55, but I think that’s beatable.

This has been the only course I’ve successfully been able to perform negative splits on (getting progressively faster), so I’m going to target that again. The forecast has been pretty steady for Sunday all week, calling for Sunny and 58, so I’m hoping that holds as that’s ideal running weather! Given that I’ve actually been putting my training miles in, I’m hoping for a good result, and to not be absolutely gassed at the end of the run if nothing else.
